Following on from last year's successful Youth Viol Summer School in Knightswood Secondary we are going bigger this year and giving a wider range of young people in Glasgow the opportunity to take part in the only activity of it's kind in Scotland.
Tuition and access to instruments is completely free of charge for the duration of the project and young people are only asked to bring a packed lunch and a snack to each weekly meeting while making their own way to / from Knightswood Secondary School.
Each session will be coached by Martin Barnett, Teacher of Music at Knightswood Secondary School with the addition of several visiting professional viol players, teachers and makers, including Alison McGIllivray (Viol Teacher at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Richard Jones (Maker of Renaissance Viols) and Thomas Munck (Professor of Early Modern European History at Glasgow University and founding member of the Squair Mile Viol Consort).
Meetings will take place at Knightswood Secondary School from 10am - 2:30pm on the following dates: 29th June, 6th July, 13th July, 20th July, 27th July, 3rd August and 10th August. The school is easily accessibly by bus/car and is a 10 minute walk from both Anniesland and Jordanhill train stations.
Each meeting will follow a similar format:
10am - Technique Class (All Viols)
11am - Treble/Tenor/Bass Viol Sectionals
12pm - Lunch Break
12:30pm - Consort Sessions
1:30pm - Visiting Viol Specialist
In addition, the final session on 10th August will conclude with an informal performance which all parents / guardians, friends and family members are invited to attend.
